Understanding Out-Of-Network Benefits

  • Out-of-network benefits allow you to see a therapist who is not in your insurance network and still receive partial reimbursement, depending on your plan.

  • You pay for sessions at the time of your appointment. I then provide a superbill, which you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement.

  • A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes the information your insurance company needs to process reimbursement, such as the type of service provided and relevant billing codes.

  • Reimbursement varies depending on your plan. Some clients receive a portion of the session cost back, while others may need to meet a deductible first.

  • You can contact your insurance provider directly and ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits. It can be helpful to ask about your deductible, reimbursement rate, and coverage for outpatient therapy.

  • If you have questions about how this works, you’re welcome to reach out. I’m happy to help you understand your options and what to expect.

  • Out-of-network therapy can offer more flexibility, privacy, and choice in finding a therapist who feels like the right fit. At the same time, using insurance may be a better option for some people depending on their coverage and financial considerations.

There isn’t one “right” approach—this decision often comes down to your individual needs, preferences, and resources. If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to reach out and we can talk through what might feel like the best fit for you.

Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining the expected cost of your medical care.

Under the No Surprises Act, health care providers are required to provide an estimate of expected charges to clients who are not using insurance.

You can request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling or at any time during treatment. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your estimate, you have the right to dispute the bill.

For more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, you can visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
