About Sharon Phelan, LCSW, PMH-C

Hi, I’m Sharon—licensed therapist, lover of the great outdoors, and a fellow human who’s endlessly inspired by the experiences and stories of others- including yours!

I am passionate about supporting new and expecting parents, young adults, and teens (14+) navigate the twists and turns of these transitional stages of life. I am certified in Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C), and have additional training and experience treating depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, and executive functioning challenges.

I have a down-to-earth, person-centered approach, guided by your self-defined goals, strengths, and needs. I understand that everyone experiences the world in their own unique way, and am committed to creating a space where all identities and ways of being are embraced and celebrated.

I draw from a range of treatment methods including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, Positive Psychology, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Motivational Interviewing.

Outside of therapy..

I love spending time outdoors walking my dog, going on hikes, reading in my hammock, or sitting by a campfire. I also enjoy a variety of hobbies; some of my favorites are painting, reading, backpacking, and gardening.

I was raised in North Carolina, and have lived and worked in various areas of the state including Greensboro, Charlotte, Boone, Raleigh, Apex, and presently, Pinehurst.

Therapy Process

  • Step 1- Complimentary 15 Minute Phone Consultation

    • If you’re interested in working with me, we’ll start by scheduling a 15 minute phone call to briefly discuss what you’re seeking support with, and if/how I may be able to help. This is also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get an idea of what it’s like to speak with me. If we decide that we are a good match, we will move forward with scheduling an intake session. If it doesn’t seem to be the right fit for your needs or my experience, I will gladly share some referrals for clinicians who might be a better match for your needs.

  • Step 2- Intake Session

    • During your intake session, I’ll get to know a bit more about you- your history, current challenges, goals, and interests. We will work together to develop a plan regarding where to start, and what types of therapeutic approaches we may use throughout treatment. We will also go over some logistics such as scheduling, informed consent, confidentiality, etc.

  • Step 3- Therapy

    • The process of therapy looks slightly different for everyone, and is dependent on your specific needs and goals. To give you a general idea, a typical session might feel like a casual conversation- we highlight areas that are going well, and check-in on the areas that are challenging. Sometimes sessions involve a lot of unpacking and processing, and sometimes they involve more skill-building or education. What we focus on, and at what pace, is largely up to you.
